merchant seamans record
« on: Friday 17 April 15 10:43 BST (UK) »
Hi all

Silly question time again.

I discovered yesterday that an uncle of mine served in the merchant navy during  WW2. I had a quick glimpse of his seamans book is there anyway from the details in the book to find out where he had been and when. I also saw that he had the Atlantic star and also the France and Germany star.

Yours Aye

I think you mean his Discharge Book. This should tell you all the vessels he sailed on and/or their official numbers, together with dates and place of discharge and engagement. It should correspond with his form CRS10.
If indeed it gives the names or official numbers of his ships there are movement cards, downloadable from the National Archives .

In my experience these cards are not 100% accurate and the vessels logbook needs to be consulted. Depends how far you wish to pursue your research.
If you could give his full name, date and place of birth it would be useful to find other MN records for him.
