H.M.S Comet to R.C.N 1934
« on: Thursday 07 July 05 11:26 BST (UK) »
This ship was sold/transferred to the Canadians in April(?) of that year.I was aboard her as a babe in arms. Was tuffed full of strawberries+cream so must have been later?Summer?
Query. Was this at Chatham, were the crew 'skeleton staff',would there be a record specifically for the handover ceremony?

Evening Annie,on the ball there again I see!
Which readout gives me cause for concern!I was born 1934,my Dad was on the ship prior to leaving with the China Squadron, supposedly married to my Mum afore that of course,I was 3y.o when he came home.
BUT! I had been shown off around his shipmates before he left.I think something is a little out of kilter here!

Well Goggy

You beautiful baby you!! ::) ::)

Maybe instead of being shown off before he went - you were shown off when he came back!! that would make it right -  date wise....
I've checked newspapers and tried to find some mention of the handover - but I couldn't find anything !!

and also Goggy -  if you were a babe in arms -  you wouldn't be "tuffed full of strawberries+cream"  ::)

Annie,Gawd luv ya!You got the bewdiful bit dead on,and  I thought it was my secret!!
Howsomever, back to the chase.Yes,was tuffed with the fruit+cream,Dad's word's,(Mam's horror),a Stoker held me in one large hand while doing some of it.
I did see some year's back an account of a China Squadron return to U.K,in which was mentioned an Aircraft Carrier,I think that was about 1934,but can't scare up the new'spaper files I want.
If you don't have anything on your slate for the next 6 mth's have a go at the famous" News of The World !!"
      Regards,Goggy. ;)

OK Goggy

I'm confused ... don't take much  ::) but didn't you say your Dad went to Russia? because the China Squadron went to Hong Kong .... did he do both??

Here's an Aircraft carrier that maybe the one...... seems like they were everywhere too - read the whole thing Goggy - very interesting!!

Hi Annie,sorry about the confusion,my fault I think,my comm's are a bit "telegrammatic"!!
Dad was a 12 yr man in the R.N.invalided out with duff eardrum's.He was a Gunner, then, get this,he was called up WW2 and ended up as a Royal(Maritime)Artillery on the Russian convoy's!!
He was also turfed out of the Khaki Commando's after Narvik, when he volunteered for airborne training.Bit of a lad, into anything physical!!
I was a terrible disappointment to him,
brought up til I was 5yr old by adoring female's,family+neighbour's!!
Hey,what more can I say??Oh yeah,my first word's on seeing him,at 3 y.o were "I don't like you".How's that for a welcome home!!!

Annie. That was very informative and interesting, did'nt like the bit about the French lad's though.Made me shiver.
The Paying off pennant mentioned was a loooong triangular flag, more than half the ship's length,to save it from damage it had a large Gold balloon at the tail, quite a sight to see eh.?
Now all I need is the fleet afore that one and I'm nearer a solution!!
