Here's a BBC News article about the whole thing that explains why we had to do something, and that something had to be done before today: www.rootschat.com/links/01f6h/

Trystan

I've just read the BBC article link and heard about changes to websites on the news a couple of days ago.
I administer a website for a local group of a charity. I didn't set up the site originally, so I don't know all the details of how it works, I just update the odd page when necessary.
Any tips on how to make it mobile friendly, please?

Phew - thought the new layout was due to my computer.  I usually land on the Home page and glance through to see if I can assist anyone, etc.  Currently my old eyes are protesting so I haven't dawdled on the Home page at all.

Now that I've seen Lizzie's post that will probably be the reason why when I've clicked on a search results page I have had to use the Google "cache" otherwise there is no website to view.

I get the same thing with Internet explorer, but with Google chrome it's a lot better. I have aged laptop which runs Vista and don't have enough memory (or something) to upgrade IE (or so I have been told)

The "homepage" on my computer looks like this.
It is displayed on a 20" widescreen 16:9 flatscreen LCD monitor at 1680 x 1050 pixels.

In case the techie details help Trystan

I'm using a 17" laptop, IceDragon browser (Firefox based) & the Homepage looks the same as Guy's.
It would look better if the 'latest topics' column was centered, the "It's the UK's largest free family history forum site...looks untidy & clumsy.

I've tried it on my Kindle Fire (7") with the  Silk browser, & it displays very well, everything is in one single column.  After browsing I clicked back to the homepage & the black banner with Home, Forum, Help etc had disappeared.
Talking of this banner, could the lettering be clearer please, pretty please ;D it's too dark for my old eyes (I doubt I'm the only one!) & almost blends into the background.

On an ipad there is something not right with the "Immigration and Emigration" link. Goes nowhere. The others beside it are working OK.

I get the same as Guy....it was a bit unexpected but it all seems fine....we have to accept that Rootschat has to be viewer friendly for all devices to keep their readership. I soon got used to it.
