Roderick Douglas place of birth
« on: Tuesday 21 April 15 06:12 BST (UK) »
Hi I just save a marriage certificate of Isobella Rutherfords parents and I can't decipher the area Roderick douglas came from.
Can anyone help?
Is it Inverness?
This time I've just posted the word rather than the whole certificate

It looks like ' Indweller' to me - inhabitant of a particular place. I'm seeing Indweller in - what is the word after in ?

Hi CB53

The other words are of Saint Cuthberts parish.
Could you live in a church?
I'm curious written on the marriage is Roderick Douglas was a Gentlemans servant by birth right?
Can you be born a servant I wonder?
Anyway thank you very much for the deciphering of the word.

If it says Indweller in St Cuthbert's Parish , then it means he lived in the Parish , not the Church. I presume the marriage was in the bride's parish which was not St Cuthbert's ? You might try asking to have this moved to the Scotland board to see if anyone there has any other ideas for you - I've not come across Gentleman's servant by birth right.

Could you post the section where 'servant by birth right' appears? Thanks.

Hi josie and CB53
Here are the words saying Birth right Roderick was a gentlemans servant at Tolbooth at Liberton.
I will post on the Scots board because I have some questions about Roderick Douglas.

I'm seeing a bit of his name , followed by gen( presumably it goes on to say gentleman's servant ) and then underneath the words birth parish , with the s in parish written as a long s which can look like an f , definitely not birth right as far as I can see.

I agree CB53 - definitely 'birth parish'. I thought it couldn't be 'birth right' which is why I asked Avongirl to post the snippet  ;).
