The Polebrooke registers (with a few gaps) have been transcribed and are available free-to-view (along with many other parishes in the country) on the FreeREG website at www.freereg.org.uk.

Oh good,I'll check those out.

I think I may have moved forward here. I went into Familysearch to look for additional information. According to the 1841 census John was 70 years old and living in Polebrook. If we were to assume the age was correct, that would put his birth around 1770. However, his son Francis was also listed in the same census with a year of birth being 1791,but as he was baptized in 1787 this of course isn't. I don't believe John was born in Warmington as it seems that the family generally seemed to stay in or around the areas where they were born(the exception being for Francis's son John who was born in Oundle and moved to Lincolnshire when he married his wife Harriet-this was just before they came to Canada). I would say, without too much more doubt, that John's parents were Henry and Elizabeth.

Hi.

Welcome to Rootschat. :)

This might be of help with rounding up and down ages in the 1841 Census.

Why would they round the ages to 5??It explains why the ages are marked the way they are in the census but it confuses me as to why they would do it in the first place.

Well,I thought I moved ahead, seems I might be wrong. I was looking at the ages of John Negus and Dorothy Wright in 1783,and I realized that maybe Henry and Elizabeth weren't John's parents.

John's age in 1783,if born about 1767:

16

Dorothy's age in 1783:

27

There goes that line out the window.

I went back and looked through the children of John and Dorothy's oldest son John and his wife,Dinah Rippin(something I didn't do earlier because they were numerous):

1.John(c.1817-1818)
2.Catherine(c.1819-)
3.William(c.1820-)
4.Thomas(c.1820-)
5.Dinah(c.1821-)
6.Mary(c.1823-)
7.Emma(c.1825-)
8.John(c.1827-)
9.Joseph(c.1830-)
10.Dorothy(c.1833-)
11.Edward(c.1835-)

Children of John's brother Francis and Sarah Lenton:

1.Martha(c.1817-1905)md.Thomas Fox 1847 Oundle
2.John(c.1819-1899)md.Harriet Smith May 27 1849 Barton upon Humber,Lincolnshire
(they were living w/Harriet's parents in B-u-H in 1851)
3.Francis(c.1822-)
4.William(c.1826-1827)
5.Ann(c.1828-)md.Henry Wilson 1851 Oundle
6.Miles(c.1831-1832)
7.Louisa(c.1834-)

(children of both brothers were all baptized in Oundle)

There are no children in either family named Edmund or Elizabeth, and I do not(yet)see any information on Martha,Matthew or any other siblings of John and Francis. I do,however, notice that the names Francis and Mary are indeed in the list. This points to the possibility that John(Sr.)'s parents were Francis Negus and Mary Elderkin,md.October 5 1746 in Warmington. I found at least four children of this couple:

1.Anne(c.1748-)
2.William(c.1750-)
3.John(c.1753-)
4.Francis(c.1756-)

This would make John about 30 in 1783 when he married Dorothy, with Dorothy being about 33.

Grrr, still having trouble with this line...

I have noticed that the February 4,1785 baptism of John Negus was also listed on FreeReg with the name of his father John but with his mother's name being Mary. Whether this is a different John baptized on the same day or "Mary" being a nickname for Dorothy I cannot figure out.

On December 11,1783(two months after John and Dorothy married)an Elizabeth Negus, also daughter of John and Mary, was baptized at the same church(All Saints)in Polebrook. Now,scrolling up the page on FreeReg,I discover that there are no earlier children of this couple.

Digital images of both the original Parish Register and BTs entries are on Ancestry.  The mother is definitely Dorothy as per the Northants Baptism Index which sugarbakers has mentioned.
