Peter Byrne army record discharge 1867
« on: Wednesday 22 April 15 10:38 BST (UK) »
Is anybody good at transcribing 19th century scrawl? I'm struggling to read the Army record of my ancestor Peter Byrne (born 1841-1844 Ballymore, Ireland). He was in the 19th Regiment of Foot (I think the 2nd Battalion, based in Burma) from 1863-1867, but he was discharged being unfit for further service. I think it's basically saying that he had some kind of abscess in 1861 before joining the army, and that it worsened during service, plus some kind of heart disease and he is a 'carrier' of something or other on the left... but I can't pin down the details!

Any help much appreciated, I will post the extracts of the record below.

Many thanks
Chris

A quick go at snippet 1:
3 superficial scars right hip [?will] to be from ...injury in thigh with deeper connexions as if from abscess. The ... appears perfectly sound...flat-footed not sufficiently ... to be cause of rejection

Fall in 1861 before joining up, hurting his thigh. Three absecesses formed; 2 near the trochanter and one just above the popliteal space.

(I have paraphrased here)

The femoral trochanter is that part of the thigh bone that sticks out a little; run your hands down the side of your buttock and the trochanter is the widest bit of bone at the side before you start to run your hand down your thigh. Many people think of it as the "hip bone".

The popliteal space is the area behind the knee joint.
