Need help on some Dublin lanes and alleys
« on: Thursday 23 April 15 00:15 BST (UK) »
I have some marriage and birth records of the 1870s and 1880s in which the following street names appear - Brides Alley, Walls Lane and Fottrell's Square.  I've searched on the OSI map viewer without success, which suggests they may no longer exist.  The records are all in St Nicholas's RC parish and, from some of the identifiable addresses in other records, the unknown streets are/were probably in the Meath St/Francis St/Thomas St area.  I'm wondering if someone with access to street directories of the period might be able to identify the location of these streets.
O'Brien, Keogh, Byrne, Cuffe, Kelly, White, Burke, Blosset, Evans, Hetherington, Hosey, Williams, Wright, Comerford, Carey, McKeon, Litton, O'Reilly, O'Toole, Nugent, Traynor, Broughall.

Walls Lane is on the MapViwer.
As dathai said off Francis Street.
On the modern map it's Carman Hall, you can see it as Walls Lane on the 25" at the end of Carman Hall, Francis St. end.

Many thanks Dathai and Jaybelnz.  Your replies are very helpful. From your information, I pinpointed Wall's Lane. As Sinann points out, its site is now part of Carman's Hall, off Meath Street. I found a Dublin Directory of the 1860s online which showed Bride's Alley connected Patrick Street with Bride's Street. I think Bride's Alley may now be known as Bride Road. Dathai's link of Fotrell's Square to Elbow Lane had me searching for the latter. From the Dublin directory I found Great Elbow lane connected Meath Street to Pimlico, while Little Elbow Lane connected Great Elbow Lane to the Coombe. This suggests to me that the Elbow Lanes were situated around where Gray Street and Reginald Street now stand and, presumably, Fotrell's Square was in that area. I would welcome any confirmation or correction on these conclusions.

Found Ellbow Lane,
Near the top of Pimlico. Where the letter L of Pimlico is on this Map.
