This isnt the John you are looking for but would clearly be related and the link at the bottom may put you in contact with others who could help, best of luck

You may also want to look at this link of someone tracing a John Mawson from Co Durham born about 1840

Just following up on my last post I did find the following which may be of help to at least finding the date of his death.

Durham 1851 census..........John Mawson aged 8      Born 1843

Durham 1901 census...........John Mawson aged 58 (stone worker and miner underground)

Durham 1911 census...........John Mawson aged 68 (coal miner - stoneman)

Bit more than a coincidence I think that the John Mawson who died in 1883 aged 23 was also a stoneworker underground. Could this have your Johns son....born in 1860 when your John was 17.

Thats about all I can help with im afraid as I dont subscribe to any of the paysites. Id suggest a visit to Durham councils registry of Births Marriages & Deaths as it seems doubtful he moved out of the area if still there aged 68 (and still working!)..........Good Luck

Are you looking for where he was buried, or when he died and where he was buried?

If you have not found his death, how do you definitely know that it was in Sunderland?

Have you got the death certificate for his wife, and was he alive then?  (As she was a lot younger than him, probably not)   Have you found the wife's burial place?

Had a quick look for her:
Possible death for wife
Elizabeth A Mawson, age 67  died    September quarter  1923   Rotherham

which then fits for a possible death for him
John Mawson age 84 died March quarter 1927   Rotherham

In which case he did outlive her.

Or have I tracked wrong family - sorry got to go now so cannot recheck for a bit.
