I have tried looking for Ann and Maggie in 1871 with no success yet.
I can't see a birth for Maggie or Margaret.

It could be that Daniel Driscoll did not exist and was a name made up for respectability.
It could be a different name e.g Dennis - David wouldn't know his father so maybe not the right name.

If we have the right family, I would say that it is important to have Ann's marriage certificate. You would then know if she was Driscoll by birth or if she was widowed.
You would also have her maiden name which may help to find her marriage to Mr Driscoll.
You would also have her maiden name to check David's birth certificate which shows mother's name.

No, I didn't get the certificate for Ann/Evan because knowing her father's name wouldn't help would it?

Knowing her fathers name gives you her maiden name - as stated above.  If she was a widow and her father was Fred Bloggs - then you have her maiden name as Bloggs.

He was David Driscoll.  I am told his mother was Ann, but I can't find any evidence of that.  Ann Driscoll maried Evan Morgan Jones in 1875 I know, but that doesn't tell me whether she was David's mother.

Who told you his mother was Ann

My grandmother told me her name was Ann.  My cousin has a photo of her.

As I said before, if you think that is the right family, then the marriage certificate may help.

That's good, Judy. Hopefully, there will be some helpful information and at least, it will stop us from quoting it to you.  :)
Please let us know the result.

Good luck

Thank you Heywood.  That's a breakthrough!!  No wonder I haven't been finding anything, if the spelling is that far off.

It is even more interesting in that my grandparents kept a pub in their village for some years - now I know where they got the idea from!

Regards
Judith

Thanks to Heywood I have just found a wonderful website about the mines and Evan Evans -

http://www.welshcoalmines.co.uk/GlamWest/Britannic.htm

if anybody is interested.  It mentions the Six Bells which became the Three Bells in the film "How Green was my Valley"
