Catherine Bain, Inverkeillor, Angus
« on: Tuesday 28 April 15 21:38 BST (UK) »
Catherine Bain is my Gg grandmother, married to James Dakers 16/8/1823. She was b about 1798 in
Inverkeillor, according to the census returns, and died in 1848 in Ferryden.

I cannot find any birth or family records for Catherine before her marriage, can anyone help please?

Roger, only about a third of BMD events were registered in the Old Parish Registers pre 1855, for all sorts of reasons. There may not be a record to be found unfortunately  :-\

Many thanks, I wasn't aware of that.

Roger, you sometimes get clues to possible grandparents' names, from children's names (re Scottish naming patter, a guide here for example www.halmyre.abel.co.uk/Family/naming.htm

Do you have the names of the parents of James Daker Snr?

I can see the following children on Family Search for James and Catherine:

James b. 1824
Elizabeth b. 1826
Isabella b. 1828
William b. 1832
David b. 1835
Agnes b. 1843

Maybe more born, a few gaps towards the end in years.

Hi Monica,

I don't have any further information for James Snr I'm afraid.  You certainly have the right family, just Alexander b 1840 was missing.

I have seen the grave stone of James and Catherine at Rossie Island cemetery, but it doesn't help with any new information.

Roger, guessing this is the family in 1861?

James Dakers 60 coal merchant b. Forfar
David Dakers 25 Seaman b. Ferryden, forfarsh
Isabell Dakers 32 dressmaker b. Ferryden, forfarsh
Agnes Dakers 18 dressmaker b. Ferryden, forfarsh
Address: 8 River St, Montrose

A pedigree file on Family Search on son David here https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/2:2:STJ6-HSR ...nothing really on parents.

A family tree on a/try here http://trees.ancestry.co.uk/tree/76495804/person/38340481412?ssrc=  You need a subs on a/try to view. David seems to be the best researched online it seems. Which is your line.

This tree shows father James as having died in 1880, on 6 May. No other details though.Does the headstone at Rossie Island cemetery help in confirming at least James' death date?

That date seems to fit with this Will & Testament entry from 1880:

James DAKERS - 26/05/1880 - SHIPOWNER, RIVER STREET, MONTROSE, D. 06/05/1880 AT MONTROSE, TESTATE    - FORFAR SHERIFF COURT   SC47/40/46

Not sure what type of document it will be (will, inventory etc) as it is not showing. 5 Pages for 10 units on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk (£2.33 - £7 for 30 units).

If correct entries, this and his death cert will give you a lot more background info. Not sure how close this line is to yours?

ADDED: OK, James Snr is your gg/grandfather http://boards.ancestry.co.uk/thread.aspx?mv=flat&m=24&p=surnames.dakers  You have viewed the will entry by the look of it. The death entry with full details, including his parents' names (if know to informant) will only be availalble to view from www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk (6 units/ search and view/£1.40 to view online).  Have a look at this post from Falkyrn...www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=717988.0

Hi Monica,

Thanks for all your efforts, they are much appreciated.  David is my line also and I am happy with the descendant tree, it is going backwards that has been the block.  I have got James Dakers Will and it added a few details that were previously unknown, but nothing going backwards.  I had already got the 20 free units from ScotlandsPeople so, following your advice, eventually found James' death certificate entry (it was listed as J Dakers which threw me for a little while) and his father is listed as William Dakers, Ploughman (deceased).  No mother is listed.  The informant was his grandson John Craigie who would have been 26 years old so possibly didn't know his great grandparents.

So now I must see if I can find anything on this William Dakers.

Regards

Hi Roger and Monica,
Interesting you should post up about Dakers around the Montrose area.  I've hit multiple brick walls so decided to come forward in time and try and track all the children and spouses of William Jolly and Davidina Thom. On Monday I was looking again at their son Arthur born 1891 who married an Elizabeth Dakers in Toronto in 1915. At that time Elizabeth claimed to be born around 1891 to a James Dakers and a Jessie Anderson - I can see a marriage for this couple at SP in 1886 in Montrose but have not yet downloaded the image. The strange thing is I can't find a birth for Elizabeth or see her in the 1901 census although I think I can see her parents living Craig in 1891. Looks like Jessie is widowed by 1901. Posting this on the off chance you've come across this branch of the family before.
