Hi Monica. Thanks that does appear to be the same Nicol family. There are quite a few with the same names so it starts getting a little confusing when looking at one being in America and another in UK etc. I'm also trying to learn how to use this chat forum for the 1st time. someone has sent me a personal message however I am battling to find a way to reply. Technology..... ???

Hi Jen,

Welllllll, James Jolly and Ann Hood Christie are my gg grandparents.  Their Betsy Jane married David Dakers in 1867 and their Annabella Christie Dakers married Edward Arthur Parton in Liverpool in 1899 and their 7th child together (Arthur had been married in 1891 and had a daughter but his wife died in 1893) Mabel Parton is my mother.

On the Jolly side I go back to John 1760-1835 m Margaret Young (Abt 1755-?).

Hi Richard, many thanks for the follow up and your pm. I had to resort to a pm to you because I couldn't find a way to post either. I would love a copy of your spreadsheet please, I would like to find the sources of the marriages in your line as I cannot find them at the moment. I will pm you with my email address.

Richard, there are some initial restrictions on new members using the Private Message service (PMs). You need to post a couple of times on the main boards to be able to access this service. Sounds like you are there and you and Roger have been able to make contact that way. The PM service is the only way to exchange personal emails and info. This is done to protect people from the misuse of emails etc by spammers.

Anyway, looks like all good now  :)

In respect of Thomas and his marriage in Belfast, Ireland in 1901. I mentioned that the Irish BMD site was down for a few days. It is now back up thankfully. This was Thomas's marriage registration https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1901/10315/5755054.pdf

To access the site/image, just add your name and tick box, followed by a tick to the captcha box and you can view and search. In this registration, father John is described as a Merchant by trade. Brother James S Nicol is a witness to Thomas's marriage.

By the look of it, this family were ambitious and felt the need to travel! You will  need to look at various sources and countries to follow up. www.familysearch.org is very good for American, SA and other world records...and it is free! Other research sites available on a subscription basis. SP I think you are familiar with? SP will let you research up the line of William's parents.

Remember that RootsChat covers other countries too so you can ask for help of people here on RC who have expertise in researching in those areas. Just try to link posts on the family in new posts so that people here can see what else has been found already and not waste time repeating searches.
