thanks to your help I managed to see the probate records ... James duff Black left everything to his daughter jean in 1964  so i presume the son born in Scotland . around 1922, had died   I don't know if he used a middle name    he was possibly the millhand on the 1954 electoral rolls  as father james duff Black is a miner /ex-miner on ALL records now

Hi brigidmac

... just to further clarify for you, the situation re: Probate record of James Duff BLACK (d. 1964).

James Duff BLACK also died intestate (i.e.  without leaving a will) so he did not "leave everything to his daughter Jean".    It was necessary for the family (or an appointee of the family) to apply to the Court for a grant of Letters of Administration.

His daughter, Jean Kyle DWYER, was in fact appointed "administratrix" (in other words, administrator ) of her father's estate ... and this was done with the blessing of her two brothers.  There is an affidavit (on the file) from James BLACK (jnr) and Ramsay Malcolm BLACK to this effect.

... incidentally, James Duff BLACK's probate record also makes mention of his son's birthdates (and confirms that in 1964, both of the sons were Post Office employees residing in Christchurch.)

D.o.B's.

James BLACK - born 24 August 1921

Ramsay Malcolm BLACK - born 16 October 1930

this info was supplied by someone on GR
no ages are given + as the children had same names as parents i don't know how you tell whether the later ones refer to the adult children + not the parents though the son had middle name Kyle .

District: Ashburton
Region or Province: Canterbury
Address: 44 Andrew Street
With James Duff Black, mill hand

Their sons were also living in Ashburton - earlier in 1954 (and at same address given above. ^)

BLACK - Ramsay Malcolm - P O employee

Thanks for your message brigidmac ... glad we got it sorted.
(Yes, I know what you mean about sifting through those familysearch NZ probate records.  They can be very slow to download at times, and you do wonder when and where they're going to end.  ;) )

Have managed to find where 11 of my fathers paternal cousins so far ; only 2 stayed in scotland
others went or were born in USA + NZ in the 1920's/30's or b.scotland  .Australia in 1952

there may be more as don't know if g.uncle Andrew who stayed in Scotland had children or if G.Uncle john  in Usa had children .

Update
Thru DNA matched with a Dwyer descendant who knew nothing of his  grandmother  Jean Kyle Black s family

thanks to all your help I was able to join some dots for him and send him a pic of his great grandmother and his great uncle" weeJimmy Black "  from 1935 that my grandfather had kept in a box of assorted photos .
