William Thomas Charles Moore
« on: Sunday 03 May 15 16:44 BST (UK) »
My partners father served in WW2, we think in Royal Engineers. He was born in 1918 and died in 1965. We think he served in Tobruck and Palestine but have nothing concrete to go on. Does anyone have any ideas how we can find his service number and, if possible, any records relating to him.
Cheers
Dinie

Thanks Nanny Jan.
I know getting any info is put luck really and may not get anything due to the time limits etc but we are struggling to even find his service number at present and really need ideas of where to start looking.
Thanks
Dinie

Another idea......did he appear on any certificates (marriage/birth) as his "occupation" might show his service details?

There are no time limits, his records will be with the MOD.  If his widow is still alive she can apply for free.

As suggested his service records are the best way forward. In fact they are the only way forward for any serious research. They will tell you all the units he served with and when he was with them, when/if he deployed overseas and where. Any injuries, any discipline matters, any courses, promotions - the list goes on...

Hi Drew5233,
we need to find his service number before we can go any further. We also know that once we get that there may be no records available.
We are looking for suggestions to find out his service number and confirmation of his regiment.
Unfortunately William Moore is a common name and we are out of ideas :(

If he served in WW2  there will be records available, held by the MOD.

Does the family have any old photographs of him in uniform or any letters/postcards that he might have sent back to them?

He seems to be featured in 3 family trees on the Ancestry site; perhaps contacting those could give you more information.  One tree shows photos of men in uniform.

Whilst his service number is helpful it is not essential. You can apply with just his date of birth along with the other info required, NOK signature (Any close relative), proof of death and payment.
