The British Newspaper archive has the best online collection

http://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk

Virtually all the papers on here are also on findmypast, but you'd need a UK subscription. BNA is a pay site but I think you can subscribe for 1 month. I have subscribed to both in the past but not currently. A quick search on BNA site gives results for Sir Watkins Williams Wynn who does come from Scotland is that the same person?

Thank you, the site looks great. We have other ancestors from the UK, and I think I will sign up.
The WWWynn from Scotland sounds VERY interesting. Thanks!

Hi Shelly
Yes, we have quite a few records, but all from the US. What would be helpful?

A census record from 1850 or later with John should give his place of birth.  If he was alive in 1870, the census should indicate if his parents were foreign born.  If he was alive in 1880 or later, the census should state where his parents were born.  If he was born outside the US, census records from 1900 on may give a date of immigration.  You might also want to check census records for Edith and any siblings to see what they give for father's place of birth.  If the family remained in New York, there are also some state census records available  - see here - http://www.genealogybranches.com/newyorkcensus.html  Wisconsin also has some state census records - http://www.newhorizonsgenealogicalservices.com/wi-census.htm

Depending on when/where John married and died, the certificates may contain a place of birth & parents' names.  Later certificates tend to be more detailed, but an informant on a death might not have accurate information.

Is this Edward Mccormack a brother of Edith's?  https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:2WVR-QW8

I don't think that link refers to my family. Edith's brother Ned seems to have lived in Iowa as an adult. Such a lot of common names in my family!

The census has not been as helpful as one would like. We firmly place the family in Oneida County,NY: in 1870 father is listed as b. NY, parents of foreign birth and in 1880 as b. NY, parents born elsewhere--a hard to decipher scrawl that starts with a C and may be Canada.
Edith was born in Fairfax Co, VA in 1860. The best match we have found in the 1860 census includes an appropriate mother and children, but the father is "Richd" b. Ireland.

But, the search goes on! My biggest problem chasing down the elusive uncle Sir William Wynn of Scotland, is that I am not sure how to hand the "sir" part. And, since it looks like William-Wynn may be hyphenated, what is the best way to enter the search terms for names?

Thanks,
Tris
