Thank you very much for all this information blemdookie but I don't think this is the family I am looking for.
There seems to have been 2 Ann Stewart's living in Stirling Street according to the people at the Mitchell library in Glasgow.
The Ann Stewart I am looking for is I think is the sister to my gr.grandmother Margaret Stewart b c. 1843 as they are both living with their grandmother Ann Mitchell in 1851 and 1861 in 2 and 4 Stirling Street.
On my great grandmother's marriage and death certificate it shows her parents as Alexander Stewart and Agnes nee Mitchell although  can't find either Ann's or Margaret's births anywhere.

In the 1881 Census there's a John Stewart, bottle packer, age 55, b. 1826 Ireland, living at
11 Dunchattan Street, Dennistoun, Glasgow.

Skoosh.

Thank you Skoosh,
really don't know if he is one of mine as can't find anything on Ann and Margaret's father Alexander Stewart.
I do have poor relief records for Ann's sister Margaret in 1891 which shows she was born in the Cowcaddens area but as yet still can't find a birth for her or Ann.

Hi, if Ann was born 1840ish she should probably be living with her parents in 1841 census but there is no sign of them. Something is wrong with the facts. Your saying Ann was living with grandmother and her sister Margaret. The 1851 census for 2 Stirling st says that Ann & Margaret were living with their grandmother also named Margaret not Ann. Somewhere along the line something is getting confused. Also if they were living with their grandma her name would be Stewart not Mitchell even tho she was born a Mitchell.Review your notes to see there is anything else you can tell us. When did she marry so we can look at cert, maybe a clue there. Kim

Hi Kim,
She is a complete mystery.
I cannot find anything on her apart from the 1851 and 1861 census.
I have all the records for her sister Margaret ( that's if they are sisters )from marriages to death showing her parents Agnes Mitchell and Alexander Stewart.
On the 1851 both girls have the grandmothers name of Mitchell and the 1861 shows their surname as Stewart.
Can't find a marriage or death for on Scotlandspeople, there are so many Ann Stewarts and Ann Mitchells to go through and the ones I have looked at are not her, it's costing me a small fortune .
