Hi, All I know is that he was the teacher at the Grammar school in Keith. His daughter Mina married a John Strachan on the 21 April 1886.

Mina was born c1865. Her father Dr James Grant was her husband teacher.
John went on to be a Professor.
I am trying to find out anything on James Grant. I just don't seem to be getting any where with them. I don't know his wife name or if they had any other children. Any help would be great. Thanks.

Have you tried Scotlandspeople website for them on 1881 census?

sorry if you have, but it is the only place i can think that you owuld be able to find them.
Did his daughter marry in England? I am assuming this because you don't have her mothers name, only her father.

John Strachan married Jemima Grant on 21 April 1886. He was aged 24 and his occupation is listed as being a Professor of Greek.

His parents are listed as being James Strachan and Ann Strachan nee Kerr.

Jemima Grant's Parents are listed as being James Grant Schoolmaster and Margaret Grant nee Stuart. ( she was deceased at the time of marriage)

James Grant schoolteacher, aged 32 and Margaret Stuart housekeeper aged 29, married in Kirkmichael in Banffshire on 7th June 1860

His parents are  listed as being John Grant  ( a Farmer )and Isabelle ???

Her parents are listed as being John Stuart ( sherrif Officer) and Margaret Stuart nee McIntosh ( not 100& sure of that surname)

Hope this helps a little.

will keep an eye out for James in the census

Best Wishes

Mo

You're done it again, Thank you so much for your help and time. You're a Star.

There is only one thing that is worrying me.
That on all the English census, 1901 and 1891 and in a newpaper report  about them getting married. John wife was put down as Mina not Jemima. Is Mina a pet name do you think?
Many thanks again.

I actually have a cousin called Jemima but she is known as Mima. Perhaps Mina is another variation or even an error.
