an update...

James Grant M.A.  Phd Headmaster Keith Public School died on January 30th 1895

(Margaret Stuart his wife predeceased him)

John Grant his father a farmer and distiller.

Isabelle Grant his mother ( still can't find her maiden name but I haven't given up)

the Death was registered by George Grant his Son and he obviously lived in Lancashire can't decipher the name of the town but the house is called Woodthorpe.



In the 1891 Census,

 James Grant aged 65 lived in 168 Land Street, Keith. with his daughter Lousia who was 21 and is listed as being his housekeeper and Helen Wall an 18year old domestic servant.

James is listed as being born in Banffshire in a place called Inveravon. and Louisa was born in Kirkmichael.

In 1871 the family was living in Banff:-

James Grant head of family, aged 45, Parish School Master. MA from the University of Aberdeen, born in Inveravon, Banffshire.

Margaret Grant wife aged 42 born in Kirkmichael, Banffshire

George Grant son aged 10 Scholar, born in Kirkmichael

Margaret Grant, daughter aged 8, Scholar, Born in Kirkmichael

Jemima Grant, daughter aged 6 Scholar, Born in Kirkmichael

Eliza G Grant, daughter aged 5 Born in Kirkmichael

Jessie Grant, daughter aged 3 Born in Kirkmichael

Louisa Grant, daughter aged 1 Born in Kirkmichael

Jane J. M. Grant daughter aged 2 months born in Banff

Penuel Innes, cousin aged 17 teacher of sewing and knitting born in Inveravon

Ann Grant aged 22 general servant born in Kirkmichael.




Margaret Grant nee Stuart died October 2nd 1877 in Land Street, Keith. aged 48 of Pulmonary Congestion for five days.

the moray council website has lots of info and newspaper references for him: http://libindx.moray.gov.uk/mainmenu.asp

it gives his Date of Birth:  19 JAN 1826, Place of Birth:  GLENLIVET, Father's Name:  JOHN GRANT, BLAIRFINDY.

no mother's name though and his birth doesnt show up on the igi either.....

Place of Death:  LOMOND BANK BROUGHTY FERRY
Death Narrative:  LIVED AT PADIHAM LANCASHIRE
 the other interesting bit is it says that "WIFE WAS DAUGHTER OF JAMES STRACHAN & ANN KERR" - but it doesnt give her first name.  :(

so grant brother & sister married strachan brother & sister...
george grant married ?? strachan
jemima grant married john strachan

Hmmm. If Penuel Innes was a cousin of James Grant, this suggests that his father John Grant could have been a brother of Helen Grant, mother of Penuel.

As you know Helen Grant or Innes' death date (1898) why not have a look at her death certificate for the names of her parents? This won't help with the surname of John's wife Isabella but may get you back another generation?

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
