It's surely the same building - look at the detail of the railings on the upper floor and the filling in the upper arches. Identical - there is not enough in the original to see all the surroundings or the canopy, but otherwise it must be the correct match

There must be an explanation for the anomolies.  Like Steve, I would have sworn Yorkslass has cracked it!

I still think we are looking from the other side of the building, with the entrance and canopy to our right, but I can now see the differences that Malky pointed out earlier. I'm not so concerned about the stucco finish on the inside flanks of the upper openings, but the actual verandah is much deeper on our picture ... there's an opening at the end looking across to the right, and there's no room for that on the new picture. Similarly the new picture doesn't have the stuccoed (?sp) vertical at the far end of the upper floor as there's no room for it.

BUT ... these are alterations. If you remove the front corner rooms, top and bottom, from the new picture (which was taken earlier than ours) you have room for the opening and for the stuccoed (?ed) vertical.

Same building from other side after alterations.

;D ... more logically it was the other way round. The rooms were added and also the flanks stuccoed. Therefore our photo was taken first.

We must congratulate Yorkslass on a rather remarkable achievement.  Talk about persistence and dedication!

Now let's hope there some story behind the photo itself!  ;D ;D

Brilliant!  8) 8) 8)

Can anybody guess what year 'ours' was taken.
The one found by Yorkslass was completely destroyed by an earthquake in 1897.

Aw good grief, that could throw a spanner in the works.  I would have said Edwardian.  Perhaps we need Jim or China to have a look and see if they can date the clothes.
