The Seaman's Tickets are on FindMyPast, to which I have a subscription. 170+ George Wright's but so far no luck.

Zero.
I will have to search elsewhere.

Going to the Nowra Library tomorrow to look at the Moruya Pioneers Books.
I know there is the Wright surname in it. Hopefully mine.
In the Nelligen/Batesman Bay Areas.

We continue.

Hi Alan,
I don't think I found my g/g/granddad's ticket in FindMyPast as I have only in the last couple of years, occasionally subscribed to it.
I might have found it in the CLIP website (Crew List Index Project).
http://www.crewlist.org.uk/index.html

I find it a difficult site to navigate and to understand some of the info I obtain.
BUT, you can find out many things on the merchant navy.
This is info on the ships named GEELONG along with their official number.
http://www.crewlist.org.uk/data/vesselsalpha.php

Vessel   Official number Port of registry and details   Source
GEELONG   4692   London, 1854, Sail, 397 tons Appropriation Books, RSS          London    MNL, 1857

London, Steam, Sold foreign (Japan), 13/6/1888 MNL (closures), 1890

and this is some info on George Wright, Master but not the one you are looking for.
http://www.crewlist.org.uk/masters/masters.php?target=wright&searchtype=Exact&initial=G&dob=1826&submit=+Search+

Masters and mates whose surname is WRIGHT, forename G..., date of birth 1826 ±5 years

Oh!, I wish I could latch onto one of those George Wrights on CLIP.
But that wouldn't be right.
Yes, I too find it hard to navigate round CLIP.
I will keep searching. Still intending to go to the local library.
Thanks

I don't suppose your George Alexander Wright is any of these two.
The first is in the Royal Navy but the second....

Edit: I see the first was married after your guy died so I dinnae think it is him.
Perhaps a relative?

I may have another reference for him which you might develop ??

Trove
Sydney Morning Herald 23 Aug 1866

It refers to Captain George Wright on the ship IOLA, arriving in Melbourne after a difficult voyage.

Can you use CLIP to further this search with IOLA in the frame ?

Thanks
Alan

Tomorrow I go to the local library to look up the Moruya Pioneers Index.
May it be fruitful !!

I should have written this prior to the previous one.

Your second call for George on the barge has credibility, but, I can't believe he would be spending time in England as a Barge Master rather than as a Ship's Captain. Especially as it is only 3 years before his death. But hang on, was he at the end of his working career? Again, I say, I will see what the library info, the Pioneer Series,  says about the family, tomorrow, IF Anything.

Thanks again,

Alan
