Hi  Dave. Welcome to RC.
This is a link to the other threads where you can see the full story. There are a couple of more links to other posts.
It`s still not known why his name was changed, but it does seem to be the same man. is it definitely your`s.
I waited for well over 18 months before deciding what to with the book and cap, but after I sent them to the museum another relative turned up.

Hi,
My father in law was born Clive lees Wood in Walsall, January 27th 1920, his mother's maiden name was Brittain, he entered the RAF as a boy apprentice as a member of the 33rd intake at Halton. He was an aircraft engineer, took his wings to become a bomber pilot in WW II, crashed in early 1945, became one of Archie MacIndoe's guinea pigs, sired three daughters and I married the middle one.He died in Wrexham November 16th 1989.
The name change came about when his mother remarried a William Butler and insisted that his name should be changed to Butler, (muchagainst his better judgement), and he was informed of his new name by his Commanding officer, when he was a serving officer,

Hi,
Dave here again. I got the date of name change wrong. He was still an apprentice at the time and the date of the document of change of name, taken by a Commissioner for Oaths is February 22nd 1937.
