Crown and Anchor Hotel, Redcar = 135, High Street?
« on: Wednesday 27 May 15 21:38 BST (UK) »
Hello.

My ancestor was landlord of the Crown and Anchor Hotel, Redcar, from about 1884 to 1888.

I also have documents with references to the address 135, High Street, Redcar, from about the same time.

Does anyone know how I can find out if 135, High Street, was the street address of the Crown and Anchor at the time, or a separate property?

Paul

FindMyPast allows a census search by address so you could check the 1881 and 1891 censuses for that address

FindMyPast Terms & Conditions do not allow publication of that type of info from its website

The Crown & Anchor is currently at 126 High Street, Redcar.

Maybe High Street has been renumbered over the years, but I would have thought that odd numbers would remain on the same side of the street?

Thanks both. I don't have access to Findmypast at the minute but I'll check that when I'm next at the library. (My lot were elsewhere in both 1881 and 1891.)

Yes, if it was number 135 then there's been some serious renumbering since!!

Slight transcription error! It does read Crown and Anchor on the image.

Aha! Hooray for FamilySearch. Thank you very much. So the C&E has always been at number 126.

So now to try and find out what was at no. 135 in the 1880s. Interestingly it's now (or was very recently) also a pub or bar. Perhaps my gggrandfather ran two pubs at once...

...or perhaps the records that mentioned number 135 were mistakes and should have read 126.

I'm answering my own questions here: no. 135 may have been a lodging house in 1890.

I bow down to your census skills!

Edit: not inconceivable that they ran the pub/hotel and a separate lodging house just down the road.
