Hi, it makes sense that Jane had her baptism at St Peter's too so this must be correct?

Not necessarily. It would be very helpful to find a birth registration for one of the children to confirm the mother's maiden name.

I see what you mean, there seems to be no record for Eliza Horton, but there are baptisms for the other children at Saint Peter's and there are some of them recorded living with Eleanor later?

Eliza's baptism has an alternate spelling for the surname:

26 Jul 1830 St Peter's
Eliza Houghton - parents William Houghton & Jane
Abode: Caxton Buildings
Occupation: Labourer

Also another child Ann in 1834:

3 Mar 1834 St Peter's
Ann Horton - parents William Horton & Jane
Abode: Caxton Buildings
Occupation: Labourer

How strange, I wonder why they would have a different spelling of the surname?  Thank you again for you help :)

Hi Chris and Shaun,

My gg grandmother was Adelaide Louisa Horton, sister to Alfred. Doing a bit of research and stumbled across your post, did you ever get to the bottom of whether William Horton shipwright married to Jane Martin is the same as William Horton the waterman? I notice that in 1901 Alfred was living next door to Adelaide and her family in Grey St
Regards
Kate

Hi Kate. Yes William Horton from Lichfield, Shropshire married Jane Martin. I couldn't trace further back as William was a base child of Ann Horton. William also married Eleanor Killey (Isle of Mann) and William Henry Horton married her sister Maria Louisa Killey. Looks like William and Maria had 8 children altogether: Adelaide, William, Mary Ellen, Sarah Ann, John J, Alfred J (my ggg grandfather), Mary J and Henry.

Thanks
Christine
