1760'S TO Mid 1770's Churchs
« on: Wednesday 03 June 15 07:11 BST (UK) »
Can someone tell me what churchs (and where) were between Middleton and Harewood on the northern side of Otley in the above time frame.  From 1851 a  1774 birthplace of Middleton was given and the best contender I can find is from a family with history in Harewood 11 miles away. There appears to be no church in Middleton till much later and  I am trying to work out how likely it would have been for the family to have lugged 11 miles back to Harewood to do the baptisms.

Selecting Middleton here:

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/Misc/Where/M.html
sends you to Ilkley parish.  :-\

Isn't Ilkley itself closer to Middleton than Harewood is?  :-\ (goggle maps is showing Middleton and Ilkley as just over a mile apart). Have you checked church records for Ilkley? Keep in mind that some people gave their place of residence as many would not know where they were born/baptised.

There are other Middletons too it seems.

Yes about 7 (no 12 I see) all up in Yorkshire. His marriage shows up in Otley in 1805 and I still have relatives in Otley and surrounds ( allbeit distant ones now . WW1 and  2 and NZ being a tourist destination have kept us in vague contact) so my gut feeling is that the nearest Middleton is most likely it.

Otley may have been the bride's parish.

Details of coverage of Ilkley parish here:
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/Misc/CBW/WRY/Ilkley.html

Maybe he wasn't baptised or maybe he was illegitimate (so check mother's surname too if known)?

Hopefully someone with more expertise in the area will be able to assist you further.  :)

I think the main parishes to check to the north would be Weston, Leathley and Kirkby Overblow, but there were other churches which were part of larger parishes: Denton (Otley) and Stainburn (K.O.). Don't disregard the south side of the River Wharfe - Adel stretched that far, and Pool had by then gained independence from Otley.
