Horace Howard Leeney Parents
« on: Saturday 06 June 15 15:56 BST (UK) »
I am looking for a Marriage Certificate for the parents of Horace Howard Leeney, Birth 26 April 1886.

They show on his Birth Certificate as: Howard Leeney and Emily Leeney (formerly Cleverly).

I have attached a scan of the Birth Certificate

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hmm - see the problem. Can't find a marriage either

This would be my suggestion for Howard in 1871 - especially given his brother's name, except if yuo see below there are some problems, eventhuogh he's the nly Howard i can see of the right age. They are in Brighton.

Elizabeth Leeney    36 - widow, b Rye
Howard Leeney    16
Horace Leeney    14
George Gonson    28 - servant

RG10, 1074, 80, 26

A Howard Frederick Leeney marries in Brighton in 1877 - neither possible spouse is called Emily or has the Cleverly surname. He's in Brighton in 1881 with two small children, married but no wife preset on the day, occupation stoker in a laundry. Dies 1890 - in Brighton

Hi, there's a tree on Ancestry (might be yours) with details of Horace Howard Leeney which indicates that by 1890 Horace had been put into a home in London and in 1893 he was sent to Canada and adopted - it actually has a copy of a logbook which records all the visits made to him whilst he was growing up.

This tree suggests his father was Frederick Howard Leeney but has no record of a marriage for him and Emily Cleverly.

Thank you for your input.
This is what I have been able to figure out:

Frederick Howard Leeney (b: 1855, d: 1890) married Martha Rigg 1877.  They had 2 children - Cecilia(1878) and Lilian(1880).

Howard Leeney and Emily Leeney (Cleverly) had Horace Howard Leeney b:1886.  Horace Howard Leeney was put into the care of Fegan Homes in 1890 and in 1893 was sent to Canada as part of the BHC. (I believe Frederick Howard and Howard are the same person due to a couple of documents that they appear to be interchangable).

I have not been able to find Howard and Emily together in any census, even though I do have the Birth certificate for Horace Howard with them listed as parents.

Howard Leeney is on the 1881 census with his 2 daughters, but no Martha Rigg in the household.
In 1891, Martha Rigg marries Frank Proctor.  They are in the 1911 census with Lilian as his Step-daughter.

I am wondering whether Frederick Howard Leeney was still legally married to Martha Rigg when Horace Howard Leeney was born to Howard and Emily Cleverly.  The fact that "Emily Leeney formerly Cleverly", is listed as the mother on the birth certificate may not be true or accurate!!

Is this possible that they lied or mislead the officials??

More than likely!

I have Martha Leeney and Frank Procter marrying in 1907 not 1891

By the way, may be a total coincidence but there's a William Cleverly on the elctoral register in 1888 at 118 Lillington St

Thanks Mabel.  Where did you find Martha Leeney and Frank Procter marrying in 1907 not 1891?
