What is this name please
« on: Saturday 09 July 05 00:25 BST (UK) »
Hi

Recently while clearing out mothers old house we found a copy of a birth certificate. Its a handwritten copy dated 1931 of the original for 1866. The mothers name is clear but the formerly looks like Clyds. I can't find any trace of a Clyds family so could this be an error and does any one have any ideas what the name should be?

Image attached.

Ralph - Relf - Cranbrook Kent
Cottrell - Barcombe Sussex
Ecclestone - Norfolk and Suffolk
Gooch - Norfolk
Burgess - Sussex and Hampshire

Other names; French, Beale, Higgins, Measday (all Kent)

Hi Linda,

Who was the certificate for and where were they born?  Might then be able to trace them on census records?

Regards, Emma ;)

Was the birth registered in Cranbrook? In which case was the mother Matilda born in Newchurch on the censuses?
The surname (though it doesn't look like it) might therefore be Lydes.

Valda

hi Moira, PrueM and Emma

I also tried every letter of the alpabet but had no luck either. Nothing for Llyds.

I have not found any census records for a Matilda in 1861, In 1871 she gives her place of birth as Newchurch Kent.

The birth cert was for Walter Relf my g-grandfather, I suspect my grandfather may have obtained this copy for some reason. I have the GRO so maybe I could obtain another copy in the hope that this one may be incorrect.

As Matilda was in reduced circumstances on the 1871 census I think there is a chance this is her on the 1861 census.

RG9 515 folio 71 East Ashford Union Workhouse
M.L. Pauper Inmate female unmarried 19 born Newchurch Kent.

It might be useful to ask for a look up in the 1851 census in Newchurch for Matilda.

My guess is that it should be Lloyds as in the bank and the 'o' was missed out.
