This looks to be the most likely family in Newchurch

1861 census RG9 555 folio 37 Newchurch  Kent
James Barber 49  Fairfield, Kent, England Head  Married Ag lab
Caroline Barber 49  Newchurch, Kent, Wife  Married
Sarah A Lydes 14 Newchurch, Kent, Daughter
James T Barber 7  Newchurch, Kent, Son

1871 census RG10 1021 folio 37 Newchurch  Kent
James Barber 59  Fairfield, Kent, Head  Married Agricultural labourer
Caroline Barber 58  Newchurch, Kent, Wife  Married
John Lydes 26  Newchurch, Kent, Son  Agricultural Labourer
James T Barber 17  Newchurch, Kent, Son  Agricultural Labourer

There is also an Edward Lydes born circa 1836 boarding in 1861 and with a family in 1871.
John Lydes may be lodging in Newchurch in 1861 enumerated as John Loids. I suspect as this surname is rare it gets mispelt quite a bit particularly as Lyde.

From FreeBMD
Marriages Dec 1850
Barber  James    Romney M'sh  5 645
Lydes  Catharine     Romney Msh  5 645

I'm sure I read somewhere once that the name Lloyd was sometimes spelt without the O

Apparently (according to Reaney) the surname Lydes comes from Lydd in Kent and means 'Dweller by the slope'.

Hi Valda and ladybird

Thank you so much for the info.

I missed the M. L. but found the others when I searched last night. It's the first time I have seen just initials on a census, some thing to keep in mind for the future!

This line of the family is proving one of the most interesting and colourful.

Yes I agree 1851 is the next step but as I have quite a number of people to trace in Kent it looks like I need my own copy.

Thank you all once again

Hi Vlada

For £2 that would be just a text transcription and not include the images?

I imagine so. I think it is a transcription, not just an index. You'll have to ask them - there are other things on their website which may interested you.
