Baptisms at Wantage, Redford
« on: Tuesday 09 June 15 08:48 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I am looking for baptisms of my Redford ancestors born to John and Elizabeth nee Eustace. They were married in 1833 so I guess the offspring could range up till the mid 1850's. Any help would be greatly appreciated, I am lead to believe that the couple may have had up to 12 children, many of whom died whilst still very young.
Many thanks in anticipation of assistance.

Hi Degsy1946,

I think your John was previously married;

I have found these bapts./Burials in Wantage;

17-8-1834 William Redford s/o John & Elizabeth - sack weaver
  8-9-1839        "       "        "     "              "               "        "
19-1-1847 Mary Ann  "       d/o   "              "               "        "

Burials;
23-6-1835 William Redford  10 months
6-12-1841 Emma         "          1 year
20-1-1847 Mary Ann     "          4   "
23-4-1849    "       "      "          2   of Grove Street.

There are no parents names listed so can't be sure they relate to John & Elizabeth but they do look
relevant.

I have also found what looks like his previous marriage also in Wantage;
18-9-1826 John Redford, (x), bac, otp
               (*) Sophia Barnard, (x), sp, otp
wits; Richard Goff, Robert Wellman

burials;
12-10-1827 William Redford  10 months
9-10-1832   Sarah          "          5     "
26-12-1832 Sophia        "         25 years (*)

These are taken from the parish records issued by the Oxford FHS on CD - OXF-WAN01 (with their permission)

Many thanks for your replies, yes, my John was married twice, I have had them in the 41 Census but, because of the early deaths I was not able to reconcile them all. Will have a look again and see how your facts fit in, will get back soon.

Hi Alan & Ian C
Thanks for your help, I have the family in 1841, 51 and 61 Census but these only reveal the following offspring, in 1841, John aged 10, Sarah, 5 and William 2. Then in 51, Sarah aged 15, William, 11 and Henry, 8 months.
In 1861 John aged 29, Elizabeth, 8, Harriet 4 plus William aged 22 with his wife and family.
The second wife, Elizabeth Eustace wrote the "Banbury Female Martyr", which is not easy to read but does say that she had 12 children the majority of whom died early. Any further info would help greatly.

Hi Degsy1946,

Not sure how far you wish to go back with the "Redford's" line.

It looks like John Redford was bapt.  5-7-1805 in Wantage s/o George & Susannah (born Sep 6 1805 [sic] presumably it should read 1804?)

Wantage, Berks
George Redford, bac, otp, (x) married Susannah Brown, sp, otp, (x) by Banns
Wits; William Westall, John Hulcup

Wantage, bapt.

11-5-1766 Susannah Brown d/o William & Mary (born 15-1)

These are taken from the Wantage CD -    OXF-WAN01  issued by the Oxfordshire FHS (with their permission)

Hope these help.
