David Cartwright
« on: Saturday 13 June 15 14:01 BST (UK) »
I wonder if anyone can help me knock down the brick wall I keep hitting! My paternal great grandfather was David Cartwright bn 1862. I know he married Louisa Maggs on 29 Nov 1889 in Aston, Birmingham and was living at Marsh Lane, Erdington. Their marriage cert states his father was a coal miner by the name of Samuel Cartwright but was deceased at the time of David's marriage. I have info for David from this time but nothing beforehand ie his mothers name, any siblings etc anyone know what my next move should be please

In 1881 he's in lodgings in Stratford -on- Avon, also there is Louisa Maggs listed as neice to the head, William Purchase. David Cartwright gives his POB as Brierley Hill Staffs.

There's no birth listed for a David Cartwright 1860-5 in the Brierley Hill Reg. District which indicates he's using another first name or Cartwright isn't the name he was born with. He could also have been illegitimate & not registered & made up a father's name which is going to make him difficult to find.
Are there any Cartwright witnesses on the marriage cert?

Really? Blimey! No there aren't any Cartwright witnesses, I have a Joseph S Manyon or Maryon and a John J Stephens. It states Samuel Cartwright (deceased) as father. I also know that David and Louisa had a daughter, my grandmother, in January 1889 and found my grandmothers birth with the surname Maggs (her mothers maiden name) but because I don't know David's mothers name I don't know where I can go with this.

I wonder if he's this one in 1871:
RG10; Piece: 3027; Folio: 111; Page: 6
It looks like the enumerator has crossed out all of the POB's & replaced them with Kingswinford. In this case what's crossed out is Brierley Hill.

Oh no! I've just looked at the one I think you've listed, Jim, which states David Cartwright as an orphan, that's proper choked me up. Is there anyway I can find out for definite?
