william gill of keswick
« on: Saturday 09 July 05 10:15 BST (UK) »
i am in conversation with a lady from Australia, and we have a difference of opinion with  our family tree.
could i ask for someone to do a lookup in 1851 and possibly 1841 for a William gill born 1804 applewaite, keswick and his wife !! . William was living at st john cottage in 1861 with his daughter Martha gill born c1840 and granddaughter Mary Abbott.(his other daughters child) age 2
Williams children i believe are: Sarah1829,Mary1831,Joseph1833,Elizabeth1835, and Martha1840.
i found there baptisms in st john of the vale in Keswick. the only marriage i found was a William gill to Mary Scott 13 Aug 1828 in crosthwaite, so i assumed that was the parents, but a lady from Australia has a Mary Scott/William gill on her family tree, but with different children as her Mary Scott emigrated to Australia with out her husband William, but she took 4 children with her in 1852.
i am wondering if  i should have my William gill married to another Mary !!.

if someone could please have a look at the 1841-51 census for me, it may well clear this problem i have. can i assume that st john in the vale is keswick !!
any help would be much appreciated
kindest regards
Michael gill

Ello

St John's in the Vale is about two miles outside Keswick, and is as it name sounds (well to me) a really nice place in the Lake District

Keswick used to be my "courting ground" and a girl whose family had land there

Let me have a quick look

Andrew

well I would if ancestory worked

hello debbie
i have had another look at this family.
in the 1851 census:
mary gill 1763 crosthwaite widow (head)
william gill 1805 crosthwaite widow (son)
sarah gill 1829 keswick grand-daughter
elizabeth gill 1836 keswick grand-daughter
martha gill 1841 keswick grand-daughter.

so this is the william and mary scott family, because they had a son called joseph gill born 1833 and i found him in the 1851 census living with the scott family

sarah scott 1763 crosthwaite widow (head)
sarah scott 1799 crosthwaite daughter
john scott 1808 crosthwaite son
ann scott 1827 crosthwaite grand-daughter
joseph gill 1834 crosthwaite grand-son

further research revealed that sarah scott widow was married to moses scott 6 jul 1789 sarah herd
children:
elizabeth scott c23/11/1789 st john in the vale
ann scott c10/5/1795 st john in the vale
mary scott c 25/12/1800 st john in the vale is this williams wife
joseph scott c 7/2/1803 st john in the vale
esther scott c 17/3/1805 st john in the vale
john scott c 1/12/1807 st john in the vale

there daughter a sarah scott had a daughter called ann c 18/6/1826 st john in the vale .

tell me what you think debbie at my findings

regards

heelo andrew
i am glad you made a mistake on the 1851 census of isaac gill and family as his son john is my ancestor, my heart sank when i read single because he was married in 1850 and his father was called isaac. i looked at the census and found him to be married but living with his father and step mother, john's wife was living with her father the greenhow family .
the link you sent me for st john of the vale is excellent i can now see where they were married.

his father was a farmer on brode/broad hall farm
john was a iron miner

many many thanks

Sorry that was ancestory's fault I wrote down the family from the family members which is alphabetical and because of the error with the jane/Isaac I took the other details off the census, they are in a different order

I don't know about the transcriber but I don't think in those days you had single gender marriages (two janes one the head the other the wife)

That site if you ever do any walking up here is brilliant for planning a walk, especially with the photos as you how difficult the walk is, I use it before I go out though not been for 7 months not as good as my photos though  ;) ;)
