esther carr simpson

i found a esther carr simpson living with my great uncle x3 in cumbria in 1901. born winlaton 1892,so i sent for the birth certificate, it stated her mother on the birth certificate as ann brown, no father. i traced ann brown living with her parents and it stated she was a widow, i cant find a marriage of a ann brown and simpson, neither can i find a death around 1891-92 in winlaton for a simpson.
ann brown  born 1866 winlaton is the daughter of mary ann brown ( irwin) who married robert turner brown. the irwin family are in my family tree, so she is a relative.
could i assume the ann brown may not have married and just stated she was a widow because she had a daughter.
i would like to find any further information on ann brown and her daughter esther carr simpson.
any help is much appreciated
