Burials at Sedgley have Mary buried 1 April 1875 age 75 and John buried 8 Jun 1858 age 58. So this looks like the parents both born about 1800.

Got a bit confused there with Annie Oakley (Annie get your gun)

There is a John Routon born 1828 Sedgley on Ancestry in 1851, living in Kingswinford, unfortunately his father appears to be John.  Coal miners.

This family is living at Commonside which fits with residence on burial records of Mary and John senior.

Maybe unconnected but there is a baptism for a John Rotton on 30 Nov 1800 (born 1 Nov 1800) at Tipton Staffs, parents Joseph and Martha.
John snr named first son Joseph and there is a burial for a Martha Roughton at Sedgley on 22 April 1835 age 65, right age to be his mother.

Joseph and Martha also baptised a Joseph Rotton in 1803 and a William Roughton in 1806 in Tipton. (From FindMyPast - Staffordshire baptisms).

OOh Thank you for all this info

The John I have is married to Ellen Edwards.

So maybe youre right about the name mix up.

We had an idea that Sedgely would pop up sooner than later to be honest.

So I will take it that this is John born Sedgley father John.

My friend was left her grandfather Roughtons birth and death certs. They were amongst her
fathers papers. So we had a lot to go on having got her gt grandparents details on the birth certificate.

She will be amazed!
