Hi,
I noticed you refer to the father as being John Avenell.

I don't know if these help but using the transcripts from the Wilts OPC for Cricklade St.Sampson (http://www.wiltshire-opc.org.uk/genealogy/index.php/parish-directory)  there are these entries;

Burial; 3-4-1844 John Avinall aged 42

Marriage; 16-7-1826 John Avenall & Mary Strong Cricklade St.Sampson

The following is taken from some transcripts on the following site;

http://www.pope-genealogy.me.uk/sampson.htm
(go to Parish Records, other, then Cricklade

Baptisms; 21-6-1829 Sarah Avenall  d/o John & Mary, Postboy, Cricklade St.Sampson
                   6-3-1831 Anne Avinal       "      "            "    Labr,              "                  "

That's a good find, Alan, as it points to Anne being the Nancy that I found in the 1841 census.

Ok so that's a good sign! What do you think a carrier is with regards to John occupation?

Carrier, Carter, and Waggoner - some one  who transports goods, using a horse and cart. So a link with being a groom on the wedding certificate.

Oh great!
Thank you Alan
Are the rest of the family around in 1851? Mary? Does she appear as a widow in 1851, maybe still with the younger children?

Oh wonderful find thank you!
 ;D this must be them then

Just wonder do you think it's odd that on her marriage cert in 1860 it names the father and occupation and doesn't say deceased? Don't they usually put deceased for fathers name if already died?

John's death

Deaths Jun 1844
AVENELL    John        Cricklade    8   217

Not necessarily, I've got certificates where I know for certain the father is dead, but it doesn't say so on a marriage certificate. I think perhaps it depends what was asked. If the vicar just said, "Name and occupation of father?" Perhaps they didn't mention he was dead.
