Tasmanian Convict Hospital Records
« on: Monday 22 June 15 10:15 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,
Just wondering if anyone would know where I would be able to view Tasmanian convict hospital records. I am looking for a Esther James who arrived in Tasmania with a 7 year sentence in August 1851. She was admitted/recorded in hospital on the 10th of December 1851. The hospital would have been around the Hobart area.

Any help would be great! Cheers

Was she a patient or was she working at the hospital?  (perhaps as a Cook ? )

Esther JAMES married James HARVEY 26 April 1852.
Esther was 24 and a Cook.   James was 34 and a Shoemaker.

So, if hospitalised with an illness, Esther seems to have recovered, married and commenced her family.   :)

Hi JM, sorry, my Internets not great at the moment and then my computer died and just got it working again now! Anyway the posts were great. Thanks so much. I didn't know about the Archives office of Tasmania, and now I am able to research my other Tassie convicts. I reckon she worked there, not actually admitted to hospital. Also good to see her actual marriage certificate to James Harvey. On her daughters marriage certificate, her name is reported as Esther Jamieson, which is obviously a name change, most likely to hide her convict past!  :)

Unfortunately the records for the Colonial Hospital appear not to have survived. Unless someone was sent to the small Invalid Hospital that later became part of the Lunatic Asylum at New Norfolk (much late Royal Derwent) records are non-existent.

The early hospital must have done a roaring trade. In my own research I've scanned through many of the burials at Holy Trinity and St Davids through the 1830's and many of the "abodes" of the deceased is given as "Hospital" Both for free and convicts alike !!

T'would appear that the Harvey's didn't stay in Tasmania and moved to Victoria sometime between 1855 and 1859. Children apearing to this couple in Victoria -

Fanny, born 1859 Collingwood
Alice, 1862 Fitzroy
John William, 1864 Fitzroy (death recorded same year)
Samuel Richard, 1866 Fitzroy
Hannah, 1869 Melbourne

Interesting to note in the 1862 and 1864 births Esther's maiden name is given as Jamieson.

Thomas James Harvey, son of James and Esther is recorded as dying in Melbourne in 1921.

There is a record of an Esther Harvey dying in Fitzroy in 1884 aged 54. This tally's very close with convict Esther James' birth year of 1828 going by her conduct record and marriage certificate.

Hope that helps...

Cheers,

Peter

Thanks for that Peter. I believe that is her correct death year as I cannot find any other records for a woman by the name of Esther Harvey or James or Jamieson dying in that area. Looks like its her! I believe Esther and James had 7 children, 2 being born in Tassie and the other 5 in Victoria, which matches up with your research. Thanks for putting in time to help uncover her life story! :)

...and quite possible that James Harvey is the ex convict per Cape Packet ex Waterloo -

http://foundersandsurvivors.org/pubsearch/convict/chain/ai31049

On the birth certificate for the female child in 1853 he is recorded as a shoe maker -

http://stors.tas.gov.au/RGD33-1-4-p542j2k

and in the newspaper from 1854 a James Harvey is recorded as stealing a log of wood from the New Wharf area. Looking at the birth certificate for James in 1855 the family is living very close at New Market place -

http://stors.tas.gov.au/RGD33-1-6-p249j2k

and this cycles back to the Cape Packet ex Waterloo convict -
