Thanks for the Findmy Past suggestion, have had a look but nothing "looks right" on there. His youngest daughter ( still living) was born in 1923 so was still in Ireland until at least late 1922, and to pre-empt the obvious question, no she doesn't know what happened to him either!

Just as a further comment any other info with regard to Thomas ( who died 1899) would be of great interest.

Once again, thank you very much, there is a lot to digest there , so might take a little time for me to get my head around that with all the different and new names that you have thrown up. Just about the only bit I already had was Thomas Surplus and Maria Smyth.
Sadly no sign of the elusive James!  ;D

Thank you for the suggestion, looks a very useful site, no luck so far for Surplus or alternatives, but did find another relative from a different Family Tree I have.

Degsy, I am from this family and, if you would kindly PM me, I would be happy to share the contact information for my cousin in England who has compiled the family genealogy.  In the meantime, I can tell you that there were other children after John Richardson.  There was a sister, Doreen, and my dad, Richard James who was born in 1919.  He was the youngest.  I only ever knew my Aunts Doreen Adams and Josephine ("Jassie") Mawhirt.  The others had all died long before I was born.  I hope I can help you find out more information.

Have a look at migration records fee paying or credit purchases or special deals, but indexes free!
I just tried Surplus on
http://search.findmypast.co.uk/results/world-records-in-travel-and-migration?lastname=surplus

3 Richard Surplus b 1920-1921 were passengers to to New York in 1944-45,
2 Richard Surplus b 1952- were passengers to canada one child 1953 to Quebec , perhaps the same or another in 1956 to Montreal

If you start searching the site above, try port of departure as Belfast. or Belfast and Liverpool, other Surplus are leaving

Degsy, the Richard Surplus born 1952 is my brother. I doubt the Richard born 1920/21 is my dad, Richard James, as his year of birth is 1919 and I believe he arrived in Canada through Quebec in the early 50s although there is no indication on the findmypast index of his arrival in Canada.  He died in 1966 so we were never able to have these conversations about his life.
