Northumberland: Thomas CUMMINS, born c1831
« on: Thursday 25 June 15 17:41 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I think Thomas CUMMINS may have been born at Earsdon, Northumberland, in 1831.  He was sentenced to transportation for 15 years on 13/10/1843 at the Northumberland (Alnwick) Quarter Sessions but subsequently pardoned on 06/11/1844.   According to the Parkhurst Prison records he had an alias, Oram MAGAN, but no amount of searching has produced any other details for Thomas CUMMINS or Oram MAGAN.

Can someone help please.

Thank you.

Some thoughts

On Ancestry there is an O Magan in the passenger and emigration lists but I cannot see the details so don't know the dates it refers to

Have you looked at the 1841 census for St Andrews Newcastle. There is a 13 year old Thomas Cummins living there with a 70 year old Thomas Cummins (grandfather?)

On the 1851 census at Bishopswearmouth there is a Thomas Cummins born 1787 with some family including a Thomas Cummins born Earsdon whose age is given as 14 (could be incorrect)

The bishops transcripts for Earsdon are on familysearch so may be worth browsing them to see if you can find Thomas' baptism as there are a couple there (Thomas and Ann) baptising children in the 1820/1830's
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

Thank you, some interesting material to consider.

I had noticed the 1841/1851 census entries but they were a little inconsistent, especially the ages, but certainly not disregarded.   And I will try FamilySearch, too!!

The emigration listing has beaten me, sadly, so I wonder if you could confirm the likely destination, USA, Australia etc., and I may then further my RootsChat search.

It was in

New South Wales, Australia, Unassisted Immigrant Passenger Lists, 1826-1922▼

Passenger Lists

and the destination was Sydney

In respect of the 1843 trial have you cbecked to see if there are any more papers at either Northumberland archives or the National Archives. Also may be worth a newspaper search via one of the online newspaper sites (although coverage will not be complete)

I will start a topic on the NSW RootsChat section .........there was no O. MAGAN who migrated to Victoria........but overall there was a huge MAGAN tribe who did migrate!!!

It appears that he stole in Earsdon according to The Newcastle Courant so I assumed he was born there or nearby.

Australia did not provide an answer sadly, but on the brighter side a suggestion that maybe "ORAM" was a transcription of "OWEN".   Further research and further disappointment.

I also learned that his pardon was based on the issue of a "Medical Certificate".  So a trawl through the death indexes, both Thomas CUMMINS and Oram (Owen) MAGAN, but nothing again.

Looks likely a case for the long-term pending tray ;D

Thanks Trish,

A lot of possibilities to consider, but in the end on account of DOB or geography I think they may have to remain reluctantly possibilities.

My "trip" to NSW was a little disappointing, except for the implication that "ORAM" was incorrectly transcribed for "OWEN".   So with renewed enthusiasm back through all the indexes :'(

Mr Thomas CUMMINS or Oram MAGAN, whichever, may have to be consigned to the long-term pending tray!!
