Dorothy Scruton-Burns and family 1871 Manchester
« on: Friday 03 July 15 12:32 BST (UK) »
can anyone help me decipher this extract please.
I can read the names but not the address - I've included the family above in case it helps with the address.
my family are Dorothy Burns with her second husband James, her daughter Susannah, son James and Robert Parr the son-in-law. I can't make out the occupations and it looks to me as if Susannah is married, but Brotherdale is definitely her maiden name and Dorothy's first married name. It also looks as though there is an entry for Susannah in the last column for infirmities, or could that just be an error or comment?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance
Bev

I think the address is possibly Twd?(Toward?) back 38 Cannal St Yard
which I assume 38 Cannal St was maybe 2 houses (back to back) and James and family were living in the back one (in the yard)

Occupations
James -Spinner unemployed
Dorothy and Susannah Domestic Servant unemployed
James Parr labourer in Iron Works

there is just a squiggle for marital state of Susannah
In infirmities column possibly just some comment when checking -on original it would probably be written in red

It looks like Susannah was entered in her maiden name -maybe that's why no clear marital status is entered

Susannah Brotherdale (spinster)father John Brotherdale occ baker married Robert Parr 3 July 1870 manchester Witnesses were James & Dorothy Burns

It also looks as though there is an entry for Susannah in the last column for infirmities, or could that just be an error or comment?

It's a county annotation -- Lan (for Lancashire) -- added to locate 'Chorlton on Ardwick'. A few lines below, Linc has similarly been added for Gainsborough (not showing in this extract).

Incidentally, I think the address could be No. 1 Back 38 Cannal Street, yard.

I think the street should be Canal St -an extra n has been entered on census - James and Dorothy both give their address as Canal St on marriage

Thank you - Canal Street features across a few of my lines, although I haven't found any crossing yet  ;)

You've helped clear up the mystery for me, and yes, I think perhaps Susannah was married.
