Parents of Charles Guy Bampton

Birth - 5 Nov 1878 @ Headington, Oxfordshire.

1881 Census - Aged 3, Charles was living with his Aunt and Uncle @ Iffley, Oxfordshire (Pressuming his Aunt was paternal side as head and wife had different surname).

1891 Census - I cant find him on this yet.

1901 Census - Aged 23 on the vessel "Wamba"

Marriage - 11 Nov 1906 @ Grimsby, Lincolnshire (Spouse = Margaret Dade).

1911 Census - Head of household @ Grimsby

Death - 13 October 1932 @ Grimsby, Lincolnshire, England

Can anyone please help me find the parents of this chap. Living with his Aunt and Uncle at 3 years of age makes it hard for me to find his parents. FreeReg doesn't seem to work for me for the last couple of months constantly giving me no search results whatever I do. Headington for this birth year do not seem to be transcribed or available online.

So Im looking for the parents of Charles Guy Bampton, and what happened to them as by the age of three he was living with his Aunt and Uncle. Once I find his parents I can maybe decipher the relationship to the 1881 census, which was paternal, his Uncle (different surname though) or his aunt.

It looks as though Charles is related on Georges wifes side

George Henwood head of house mentioned on 1881 possibly married a Sarah Bampton (same page) AMJ 1861 Headington, so possibly Charles mother, father was a sibling of Sarahs?
1851 gives George, Henry , William and Ann ,there may be more.

Hello Dean,

The FreeReg website used to contain an explanation that they had been denied access to Oxfordshire parish registers.  There's still not much on there (not FreeReg's fault!) and nothing for the area you want, unfortunately.

However, the PRs have been transcribed by Oxfordshire Family History Society and are available on CD.  Where exactly was Charles born - in the parish of Headington, or somewhere else within the Headington registration district which covered a large number of parishes (including Iffley)?  There are 3 CDs for Headington RD, and I have two of them, so I might be able to do a look-up for you.

I take it you don't have his birth certificate, which would of course name his parents.  Where did you find his exact date of birth?

It's very late here so I'll look at this again tomorrow.

Hi, thank you all so much for your replies so far.

The dates of both his birth and death were given to me by his granddaughter (my aunt), maybe I should get a certificate for him. I thought given the yer of his birth it should have been easy to find.

He was living at Iffley at 3yrs old so im dangerously presuming that was his birthplace.

Assuming that George HENWOOD married Sarah BAMPTON ...

George HENWOOD is a widower on the 1881 census.  Tracing him back to the 1871 census brings up his wife Sarah (nee BAMPTON), born c1837 in Oxford.

On the 1861 census Sarah is with her parents and siblings, the male ones being:

William, born 1840 Littlemore
Henry, born 1845 Iffley
George, born 1847 Iffley

It would seem that one of the above could be Charles Guy BAMPTON's father.

George appears on the 1881 census with a wife and young family, so it's unlikely to be him.  Further research needs to be done into the other two brothers.
