Ancestry has transcript of his marriage in Grimsby. For Margaret Dade's father it gives his name as William Dade and for Charles's father it only says Bampton with no forename.

Iffley PRs (as transcribed by OFHS) contain the following baptism entry:

'Jan 28 1879
BAMPTON  Charlie Guy    s. Elizabeth (no father's name)'

Maybe his father's surname was GUY?  I used to know a family of that name.

Hope this helps,
Carol

I thought if he was illegit, Elizabeth was best candidate, given her age, Emily would have been a bit young - but still possible. I think Ann Bampton married Charles Tolley in 1870. It doesn't look like they had any children. In 1891, Fanny Henwood (niece) was with Charles and Ann.

TNA has a reference to Charles Guy Bampton, I think its naval reserve list. There's a charge to download. that would fit with him being on a boat in 1901

It looks like his mother is a servant in the household of James Gibson (architect) in Basingstoke in 1881.

Also looked like she married
15 Sept 1886 in Hammersmith to Frederick Talbot, her father Richard a stone mason, Frederick's  father also called Richard (labourer). Frederick was a keeper (poss gamekeeper?) and a widower

Well spotted!

I hadn't realised the name was the same, being that she married in Hammersmith, I thought Frederick was from that area - but why would you need a game keeper in Hammersmith?
