Shipwreck off South Shields 1861
« on: Friday 10 July 15 14:47 BST (UK) »
I am trying to locate the grave (s) of Alexander Patience aged 19 yrs and Hugh Fraser who were both drowned in early February 1861 when the schooner Fowlis was destroyed on Herd Sands by the great storm.
I believe they may have been buried in St Stephens cemetary in South Shields, or possibly St Hildas cemetary, it is unlikely there would be  any grave stone.
I have most of the scans of the newspapers at the time.
Any help would be appreciated.

Regards
James

Thanks for your reply Middlesbrough,
I was hoping to locate a grave(s) in either St. Stephens or St Hildas Churches, probably a paupers grave or a record of them having been interred in a common grave, Alexander is my gguncle.
Co incidentally I am from Middlesbrough.

Thanks
James

Alexander is buried at St Stephens but Hugh was I presume lost at sea, so therefore no burial for him.

If you look at the burial records of any parish that has coastline there are many entries for burials of unknown persons washed up on shore.  They give gender and approximate age and sometimes the name of a ship that the person might be from-maybe.  Sad.
Co. Durham:  Hall, Snowdon, Makepeace, Barnfather, Barrass, Gray/Grey, Wilson, Carr, Cole, Richardson, Greener, Lamb
Northumberland:  Grey/Gray, Richardson, Barnfather, Heron, Redpath

Hi MacIntosh.
Just back from South Shields and looked up the transcipt of the St. Stephen's Burial Register for one of your men (I couldn't remember the names of both and didn't have access to Rootschat).

This is the transcript entry I found: "12th February 1861 Patience, Alexander.  Abode: Drowned near the Suth Pier form the Schooner "Fowlis" of Inverness.  Age 19/20.

That's great information Rhododendron, where is the St Stephens burial register located?. I have been trying to contact the presbytery at St Stephens but the phone is giving a disconnect tone. I was hoping to find the burial plot of Alexander Patience and Hugh Fraser.

Thanks
James

It was an index of entries and not the original PRegister Macintosh. I forget to say that St Stephens has no gravestones for either of your men.
