Catharine Corbett - Thurlby?
« on: Wednesday 15 July 15 12:06 BST (UK) »
I am stumped.

My ancestor married Catharine Corbett in 1799 as detailed below:

Marriage to Catharine Corbett (wid.)
1799
20 Nov
Thurlby By Newark, Lincolnshire, England

I visited St Germain's in Thurlby hoping to find some family clues wrt Catharine and found none. No family graves etc.

However if she married my ancestor using her deceased husband's name, then what is her maiden name?

Assumed to be born in either Lincoln or Newark On Trent in 1778, that's all the information I have on her.

Can anyone help solve the mystery surrounding her?

Thanking you in advance,

Chris

Hi Chris,
Yes she would Marry under her Married name.
Do you know when/where she died?
Is the born c 1778 from her Burial Record?
Seems wrong if she was a Widow in 1799 (Widowed at 20/21)

Trish :)

The Marriage is on FreeREG 1799
There is a Licence
(not sure how you would find that)

I have checked on F/S and FreeREG;
Corbett Burials prior to the 1799 Marriage in Lincs/Notts
Corbett Births 10yrs pre 1799 Linsc/Notts with a Mother Catherine
Corbett Marriages 10yrs pre 1799 Lincs/Notts to a Catharine/Catherine
Nothing even using Soundex option

hello Trish,

in response to your comments;

Your suggestion rings a bell in my grey cells! She was older at the time of marriage, and her DOB should be 1769 and be 30 years old at the time of marriage to my ancestor. I recall seeing something online that there was a court case to try to prevent the marriage from happening or to obtain a marriage licence for my ancestor James. James was 21 at the time of marriage.

Therefore her DOB would be 1769 and James as 1778.

You suggested their children to be : Ann, Richard (my ancestor), Charles, Christopher, and Frederick. They are indeed correct and is what I have on my family tree.

I hope the revised DOB would show something up in the BMD indexes??

Chris

PS I have posted on the Lincs board as well. Thurlby happens to almost sit on the border of both counties.

Hopefully something will come up on the Lincs Board.

There is a 1859 Burial Grantham, Lincs, for a James Heppenstall age 87 (occp Maltster)
He married Charlotte HENSTOCK 1793 Newark
They were still Baptising Children Newark same time as your James/Catherine and later.
Their last Child ALBERT 6 Feb 1815 has Fathers Occp as Maltster

So not your James Burial.

Good luck :)

Thank you Trish.

That makes two James born in the same decade of the 1780s. No doubt to two different fathers and both living in Newark as well and that's another maltser!

Someone in the family must have been a malster and no doubt encouraged his children and nephews to be malters/brewers.

We have so many children with same names in any Heppenstall family living in Newark. Some of the children with the same name are also born within a year of each other! That makes for a logistical nightmare!

What is F/S?

Thank you,

Chris
