Penelope daughter of John V of Glenalladale
« on: Sunday 10 July 05 16:16 BST (UK) »
Penelope married Angus MacDonald, Tacksman of Stonybride, S. Uist. I am trying to find the names of their children.  I am sorry I don't have dates. Her brother Angus was born circa 1685. thank you.

Whan entering their names into LDS it cam up with 17 matches of children.
although, some of these have been submitted to LDS and not taken from Parish records, so they aren't very reliable

These all look like patron submitted records - treat them with caution.  The baptisms register for South Uist would appear to no longer exist (if it ever did at that time) - the Islands were not that good at keeping records or if they were, they no longer exist.  You may have to try another approach.  Are you aware of the Clan Donald website:

http://www.clandonald.org.uk/index.html

I found Penelope but did not go into it too much further.

I was under the misapprehension that the LDS acquired their data from primary sources. I will try to check some of the names on the list. The place name Belfinlay rings a bell.

I have been accessing the Clan Donald website. I have obtained some of my clues from that site, though I hadn't seen the Penelope page . I was led to the site through my research in Prince Edward Island, Canada. In fact , I'm looking for information on the issue on all of the children of John V.
Thanks.
JoAnne

Hi JoAnn

The LDS do have a lot of entries extracted fomr the parish records, but they also have some which have been submitted to them and are therefore not as reliable. You would be best to double check these yourself if you can or try to find other methods to confirm them, Sometimes you wil find 2 or 3 entries for the same person each contradicting the other.

I did mention this to you in my reply that most of them were submitted.

It also tells you on each entry where the information was obtained form.
Hope this helps you understand it a little clearer.

There were a whole set of cadets [junior lines] of Clanranald. Glenalladale was one of them but some of the records listed here are for another cousinly line, the MacDonalds of Milton, which is in South Uist not Glasgow or Lanark and is close to but not the same place as Stoneybridge. The MacDonalds of Belfinlay were yet another of these related lines. In 1720 the head of the Belfinlay family swapped various other lands plus Belfinlay, which lay between Balivanich and Nunton House in Benbecula, for lands around Arisaig on the Clanranald mainland. It was Donald of Benbecula, who shortly after succeeded as 16th chief of Clanranald when the main line died out in 1725, who engineered the swap. He lived at Nunton and the acquisition of the Belfinlay lands expanded his home farm. The MacDonalds of Belfinlay kept the name but were after that divorced from their place of origin.

Hope this helps.
