« on: Sunday 10 July 05 16:30 BST (UK) »
Hello All,

Can SKS please look for Isaac and Sarah Turner and family living in Dacre in 1851.

I think Sarah will be aged around 53.

Many thanks,

Mark

Hi Mark

not sure who you meant by SKS - was it me? My initials are SFS?

If it was afraid I don't have the 1851 for the area you require but you could try RolyGrigg's excellent on-line name and place index:

http://homepages.tesco.net/~rolygrigg/

Dacre was just outside Penrith which is listed on these pages as the Leath Ward.  Try part 2 which lists a possible for Sarah, but no Isaac.

Site also gives details of where you can purchase full transcripts if you want to - problem with 1851 is that it is paperbased in 71 volumes so this may be your only hope.

Cheers

Hi Mark

I have checked the origional Dacre church records for you.

Information as follows:-

Isaac Turner married Sarah Slee on January 7th 1830.
He was  a bachelor and Blacksmith by trade and she a widow, at Dacre, both were able to write there names on the wedding certifcate, witness was a Jane Abbot, I'm sorry but I couldn't make out the second witness.

Children as follows:-
Joseph Turner born 11 February 1831
Isaac Turner born 17 March 1833

No more children on the Dacre records.

I also checked the Dacre 1851 census, but could not find them, you might need to try outlying villages , as Dacre was used by many from other towns and villages.
Hope this helps

Regards

Hi Louise,

Many thanks for finding the marriage.  Very interesting that Sarah was a Widow - I guess that "Slee" would be her former husband's name?

She had some bad luck because she a a widow again in 1861.

Using the link that Sue has sent - many thank's Sue! - I think they are in Penrith Town (HO107/2425) - not far from Dacre. But The website only has a name index.

If it's of use to anyone reading this in years to come ....

"Young" Isaac is listed in the directories as a Watchmaker in Penrith. Sarah maybe living with him?

Joseph (our ancestor) came to Alford - Lincolnshire. His marriage Cert confirms he was the son of Isaac - A Blacksmith, and various censuses confirm he was born in Dacre circa 1831.

Thanks again,

Mark

There is a probate record for an Isaac Turner from Penrith, watchmaker and fishmonger who died 11 Jan 1883 at Penrith, his widow is listed as Jane Turner.
He is aged 61 when he died according to the death index, which makes an approximate birth year of 1822.
