All Canada, British Regimental Registers of Service, 1756-1900
« on: Saturday 01 August 15 18:03 BST (UK) »
Hi Researchers,

I'm looking for a George Pole and a Francis Pole, both from Somerset.

What sort of information does this dataset contain?

Many thanks
Clive Harlow

Do not ask for look-ups from commercial sources.
Most commercial sources have strict 'Terms of Use', which forbid publishing their data elsewhere, so asking for such look-ups is also asking people to ignore the 'Terms of Use'.

I'd be grateful for enlightenment.  The register referred to in the post is available for anyone to see, free of charge, at the National  Archives.  If I go there and send the results of my research via Rootschat, have I offended against the policy?

The register is also available to subscribers on Ancestry.  My guess is that sending the information and saying it comes from Ancestry is against the rule - is that the case?  If so one notes daily examples of the rules being flouted here.  It may be that your editing of the post has removed something that would make it clear what the problem was?

Always willing to learn.

MaxD,

Can you please tell me how I can find the Canada British Regimental Registers of Service at the National Archive.

I have an Ancestry subscription but it is an Australian one and doesn't include this register. I am also in Australia so I was hoping that I could read it somewhere one line.

The person I am interested in is George Freeman Birth 1792, Freshford Somerset. Apparently he was in the Military on the 9 Aug 1808 Age 16. He was the father of my Convict ancestor so I would dearly love to know more about him.

Thank you for your help, cheers Ted Freeman

Edited I see that MaxD believes it is still available in Kew.

Check over the holidays as Ancestry often give free access. You should create a new account as it will recognize you as an AU member otherwise.

There is little information as to why they created this database. It seems to be for regiments that served in Canada. But it does not mean that all men served there.

Go to http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk  Search WO 25/493 and WO 25/494 both of which are downloadable free.  He is among the Fs in 293, haven't looked in 294.

Agree with Ken, the Ancestry title with "Canada"  is a bit misleading, I find no record of the 82nd Foot in Canada. See
 https://archive.org/stream/historicalrecor00jarvgoog/historicalrecor00jarvgoog_djvu.txt.

Let us know how it goes.
