Manchester/Lancashire Regiment in Belgium 1944
« on: Monday 03 August 15 13:41 BST (UK) »
I've reposted this from the Lancashire Forum. I spotted the link on how to get service records on another post so I'll add that to my things to do list, but I thought I'd share the pictures. I don't know who any of the other people are other than the names Grandad wrote on the back.

Picture taken in Belgium 1944. My Grandad sent this to my Grandma before they were married. I don't know what regiment he was in, but he lived in Hulme Manchester before he signed up and when he returned home before marrying my Nana and moved over to the other side of Chester Road and into Old Trafford. I don't know how long he served for either. He would have been 16 shortly after war was declared and was a driver.

Top row: Pte Harry Farrell, James Frost, George Evans, L/Cpl George Selman
Bottom row: Pte Day, Garymore , Lennon, Angus, Cpl Parkin and Pte Fenwick
Frost, Quine, Stowell, Atherton, Gill.

Hi

I wouldn't let his home county mislead you into thinking that it would link him to a Manchester or Lancashire regiment. The Army sent you where men were needed and where you lived played little to no difference during conscription to what unit you served with.

Can you take a closer picture of the chaps cap badge?

His service records will reveal all, regarding the units he served with and where he served with them.

I don't know if this one helps or not. I know its not straight on like the other, but the other is only a small photo to begin with so I'm not sure it would get any better.

It looks like a Royal Signals Field service cap, the badge is to much out of focus, was he in the army after ww2? On the cap badge the messenger Mercury was enclosed within a circlet pre 1947 after that he is depicted without the circlet and standing on a globe with Kings crown above.
I still think they are a Despatch rider section.

James

Thank you James. No he didn't stay in the army. He married in December 1945 and his occupation was as a motor mechanic for the GPO.

3 of them are wearing motorbike leggings but I don't think its a 'Jimmy' cap badge. Its not rounded enough in my opinion. They could be a MT Section, most if not all units had m/bikes. I'd still like a close up of the badge on the service cap worn by the corporal in the first picture. Even if I can't see detail I may be able to work it out from its shape.

I've done a head shot crop of Cpl on the front row, don't think I can get it any bigger...

Thanks - I think the only way you'll know 100% is by getting a copy of his service records. The first one worn by the Corporal looks very Recce Regiment and the one wearing the field service cap looks like the Buffs to me but they are just poor guess's.

Have you applied for/want a copy of his service records?
