William Horatio Brown
« on: Wednesday 05 August 15 06:16 BST (UK) »
I'm hoping that someone maybe able to help me regarding some letters or petitions that William Horatio Brown wrote requesting a free passage from England back to the colony of New South Wales for himself, his wife Susannah, and his daughter Angela Patmos Brown. These letters were written to the Secretary of State in England in 1815. William had been transported for seven years for the crime of bigamy in 1807. I don't know if he was successful in his petition or not, but the family arrived back in the colony in 1816. If anyone has seen these letters, or can tell me how or where I could access them I would be very grateful.
Regards,
Rosjan.

I think you may have to try and find the record there if it survives.

Assisted immigration didn't start until 1839 so I am not sure how he got back unless as crew, maybe.
Unassisted immigration didn't start officially on the online lists until 1842, but obviously many people had paid their way before this. Don't think he would have topped any list though. :-X

Some background info here: (As I understand it, the practice of applying for family at Govt expense originates with Governor Lachlan Macquarie, Governor of the Penal colony of NSW 1810-1821 )

https://www.records.nsw.gov.au/state-archives/research-topics/convicts/convicts
" Families of Convicts
Families

Application to bring family out,  Wives and families of convicts sometimes accompanied their convict relations or came out later. ......

Convicts, who had been in the colony for a period and who did not commit further offences were eligible to apply to have their families brought out at the expense of the Crown. Applications had to show that convicts would be able to support their families upon their arrival and not incur any further expense to the Government. In general, families were not permitted to reunite in Australia unless the convict applying had a Ticket of Leave which allowed convicts to work for themselves, to provide a means of supporting their families. "
