Just thought I'd give this a bump-up.

Still no sign of a marriage between Maximillian Ballard (b Mancetter, 1723 - d Cwmyoy 1781) and Sophia (d Cwmyoy, 1783).

Many thanks, Amondg and Willsy.

I do have most of those references but not the pardon!  I knew he was on the Emigrants in Bondage list for sheep stealing in 1761, and that he was back in Cwmyoy to be a witness at his son's wedding in 1769.  I'm not sure if he actually went to the US as a convict; one could assume that being actually on the list meant that a voyage took place as I don't see him on any UK convict list.  And then, presumably he came back after the pardon.   My ancestry sub doesn't cover US so I must hie myself to the local library.

As his first child (first I've found anyway) was baptised 1748 in Cwmyoy as were later children, he obviously moved from Mancetter to Cwmyoy between his birth 1723 and the child's baptism in 1748, presumably marrying Sophia, perhaps around 1747 or earlier.

I think I'll put this up on the Monmouthshire board as well.

Maximilian was a forename used in 3 generations of the Ballards in Mancetter and passed from father to son ( births in 1633, 1670, misses a generation, then 1723). This somewhat unusual name has made them relatively easy to trace but has led to some confusion - eg I have a burial in Mancetter 1700 but is it the chap b 1633 or the one born 1670.

Anyhow, once again - many thanks!

Wow - many thanks, Willsy.

I think the reprieve was from the death sentence, possibly commuted to some kind of transportation which would be covered by the Emigrants in Bondage record - perhaps! Seems a long way for him to be sent and then return but I don't know much about transported convicts except for transportation to Australia, later.  I do know that there were convicts sent to North America and Jamaica before Australia became 'available', which would fit with Max's timings.

I have seen an account of the trial in a newspaper but stupidly didn't record the reference  ::) ::)

Had a look at the list where it says free pardon for Max, the 2 ladies named in the newspaper article have mitigation for 14yrs transportation to America.
