Hello
I realise this is an old post but I only came across it recently whilst looking for information about my own travelling ancestors from Sussex and Kent. I believe I may have found the birth registration of your ancestor Ann Jones, though she is listed under a different surname.
On the 1881 census, Ann is married to John Eastwood are they are living in Dartford, Kent with three children. I searched for the birth records of these three children and found:
- Harriet born 1862, Dartford, Kent - mother REYNOLDS
- John born 1864, Dartford, Kent - mother REYNOLDS
- Caroline born 1866, West Ham, Essex - mother REYNOLDS (listed incorrectly on census)
Interestingly, though she gave her surname as Jones when she married, she gave her surname as Reynolds when registering her children.
Armed with this, I looked for your ancestor’s birth record using the name Ann Reynolds and found:
Ann Reynolds born 1839, Dartford, Kent - mother JONES
I have seen this with my own travelling ancestors where they seem to use both their mother’s or their father’s surname interchangeably so I felt I was on the right track.
I decided to see if there were any other Reynolds children with mother Jones born around the same time and place. I found three:
- John Reynolds born 1840 Malling, Kent
- Phoebe Reynolds born 1841 Sevenoaks, Kent
- Sarah Reynolds born 1850 Sevenoaks, Kent
Of significant interest, I also found a baptismal record for Phoebe:
Phoebe Reynolds
Baptised 3 Jan 1841
St Martin’s Church, Brasted, Kent
Parents: George Reynolds (Tramp?) & Charlotte
The father’s name George and the occupation listed as (query) tramp lead me to believe that is the correct family.
So, to sum up - I believe your ancestor Ann Jones was born:
Ann Reynolds in 1839 in Dartford, Kent the daughter of George Reynolds and Charlotte Jones and that she had at least three siblings.
Sorry if I have just given you a load of information that you no longer need but I have been stuck indoors with covid and found this a relaxing way to pass the time 😂
