Overseas BMDs for UK citizens
« on: Wednesday 12 August 15 14:52 BST (UK) »
Where can I check the index for BMDs for overseas events -- specifically China in the early 1900's ?

I am looking for Ethel Tee Helps and I have reason to believe she went out to China in 1913, but cannot find a record of her return -- so would like to check if she married or died out there.

Her brother, Rev John Sidney Helps was a missionaary in China, married twice and had several children all in China - so I suspect the "Miss Helps" who travels out to Shanghai in early 1913 was  Ethel going to join her brother who was recently widowed. I can find John Sidney & family coming & going to & from China several times between 1902 and 1927, but no other sign of Ethel

I Googled "Ethel Tee Helps" and that brings up a few "Hits" including information on the Helps family. It is on  the item called

Message Boards

http://boards.ancestry.com.au/localities.britisles.england.som.general/1389/mb.ashx?pnt=1

It is freely accessible on Google so should be no problems.

Thanks Barry -- but that is my post from when i first started tracing the family some 15 years ago! :)

Have found out a lot since then -- but Ethel vanishes after the probable voyage to China in 1913!

I had a look for her death on FindMyPast which has the overseas BMD records without any luck. You can see her birth and she appears in the 1891 census transcript but that is it. I also had a look to see if there was a record for an overseas marriage but couldn't see anything for that either.

Either the name has been transcribed such that we aren't finding the record or the family didn't register things with the embassy - it was optional.

I checked the Archives of the Straits Times, Singapore with no luck. I wonder if she could be in the London Times which is a subscription website.

I have a similar problem. An American lady missionary by the name of Helen Tow married 23 Aug 1924. But was it in Canton where the mission was based (and where the majority of her friends were) or was it Hong Kong where her British husband worked for the Hong Kong Government?

William Jan Heyes    27
Caroline M Heyes    26
Ethel T Heyes    21

Eastbourne 'later'

Only other record to note for you that I could find was an Ethel T Help Canadian Passenger List going to her brother but am not sure what is written afterwards in the read write col. looks like it a badly smudged Canada

Thank you Willsy -- that does indeed seem to be her :)

Another of her brothers, George Stanley Helps, did  emigrate, firstly to Canada and then onto the USA

So it looks like she did indeed return to the UK from China and then set out to Canada not long afterwards!

So now need to check Canadian records for a marriage / death

Some fascinating photo's of China....back to Canada :)

Can see John Travelling too, quite a list for 1927 which I am sure you have
