Hi ,

Scotlandspeople has the death of a James Vass 1872 Lanark(shire) , born c1799.

Perhaps you have looked at that one already  :-\

Have you found James or Janet on any Census ?

Do you have the family on any Census (helps pin down the area of death search)?
For example, the 1841 Scottish Census has a James Vass, 40, Jannet, age 40 + Helen, James, Margaret and Rebecca  at Cheapside Street, Barony, Lanarkshire.

Ages fit allowing for rounding down.

Do you have any marriages for their children after 1855 which would signify if the parents were deceased which is also good for time frames  ???

Also another good tool is the fact that women are registered in their maiden names upon death as well as married name in Scotland  :P

Thank you so much for all that info. I have been on Scotlands people but not found any Census. I did find a James Vass but he was a visitor so no family named so I am not sure if he was the right one or not.
I will have a look what info I have already got on them (which isn't much). Their daughter (and granddaughter) is Davina Watt Vass who is my gt.gt.grandmother.  She married Robert Fraser that much I do now, but I know nothing of her parents and grandparents. I do now they were all from Scotland. Davina and Robert moved to Liverpool eventully.

If married in Scotland after 1855 both mother & father will be named for bride & groom.

Also, use the name variant or soundex options for different spellings which was common.
