Methodists
« on: Tuesday 18 August 15 00:15 BST (UK) »
I have some Non conformist baptisms but without the denomination recorded.  I am attempting to over come this omission my using the name of the minister.   Would anyone known were I could get a list of Methodist ministers in Normanton c1887-1910?  I believe at this time there were 3 Methodist chapels in the town,  Primitive, Wesleyan & Methodist.

If you have an Ancestry subscription, or acess in your local library, you might be to find the entries in the West Yorkshire Non-conformist collection and see which chapel they belong to.

Another possible way would be to consult the online catalogue of West Yorkshire Archive Service (WYAS) at http://catalogue.wyjs.org.uk/Default.aspx?

By searching for Normanton and Methodist (under Any Text click Refine Serach Criteria and select "with all the words") I got 30 results. I haven't drilled down into these, but if you do so you might possibly find references to ministers among the lists of correspondence etc.

Finally, if you have no luck there, you might find some help at the Methodist Heritage website http://www.methodistheritage.org.uk/index.htm    (I had an old link for Methodist Archives somewhere in the University of Manchester, but it's no longer working. This might be the replacement.)

The John Rylands library in Manchester has some Methodist archive resources.  If you google it there may be some information there

There are certainly a load of Baptist and other non-conformist records on "Ancestry" - I found a lot at Heptonstall, and that's West Riding. (Not all seem to have been transcribed accurately / fully, it was a lot better deciphering the images than just going by the entry. Try each of the chapels for the period you want.
Threlfall (Southport), Isherwood (lancs & Canada), Newbould + Topliss(Derby), Keating & Cummins (Ireland + lancs), Fisher, Strong& Casson (all Cumberland) & Downie & Bowie, Linlithgow area Scotland . Also interested in Leigh& Burrows,(Lancashire) Griffiths (Shropshire & lancs), Leaver (Lancs/Yorks) & Anderson(Cumberland and very elusive)

Not sure if this is of help to you, as the period I am interested in was early 19th century BUT The Yorkshire Archaeological Society in Leeds have some Methodist Circuit records with lists of the preachers.  For instance I have the Bramley Circuit in 1817 which lists the surnames of 43 preachers and 11 probationers, and 1818 listing 52 preachers and 8 probationers, plus the various chapels within the Bramley Circuit.

Perhaps they have records for other areas  :-\
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
Remember - "They'll be found when they want to be found" !!!

That's a possible lead.  My gran was in the Band of Hope which I believe was an off shoot of the Methodists.

Doing a bit of further searching, I came across a book "A History of Normanton Methodist Circuit" by Ronnie Aitchison. It's available at Amazon, with a preview of a few pages.
